Description
Carol R Williams utilizes art as an interactive curriculum design to create engaging play environments for young people (in which they participate in creating) and then uses these environments to train teachers about various learning styles (visual, tactile, auditory, cultural competency, sustainability/recycling & environment).
This particular environment is an underwater environment. Youth recycled large box to paint and create a whale that they could climb on and through (and go 'fishing' in the hole in his head.) Students spent a week designing, painting and hanging their fish or seahorses (above their heads, along with streamers to replicate waves.) Youth spent a week 'designing, then building and painting' the recycled cardboard 'Boat' you see them standing/ fishing out of. Youth created a water scene (can be seen in the background.) Students painted a recycled shower curtain to resemble the ocean floor and designed costumes (made out of recycled aprons) to learn about and discover ocean creatures. All sorts of recycled materials were brought in to replicate an ocean/the sea (fishing poles, so students could fish, small inflatable swimming rings, so students could 'save' (life preservers) each other from the whale, play boats, etc.) Games and learning material, such as puzzles & books regarding oceans were placed in clear sight on the surrounding shelves. The windows were utilized to display youth stories of times they went to the beach.
